Here is the exciting end to the story.
Three years have passed since the marriage of Ponyboy and Paul. Sodapop was genuinely excited while Darry had attended but look on in disgust. It had been two years since they had spoken.
Ponyboy had returned home from his class doing sports physiology and was excited for the weekend.. Ponyboy had taken the experience of his younger years of not being able to defend himself seriously and desired to protect himself and those around him. He was on a solid bulking routine, and even rivalled Darry in pure physical strength and finesse.
Paul took great interest in boxing and desired to be the best of all time. Ponyboy despite excited about his future plans, was still dealing with the grief of losing friends and being ghosted by Cherry. After a nice supper together, Ponyboy went to bed early and had another recurring nightmare. His nightmares consisted of what felt like someone trying to control him through his dreams and implant him with dangerous thoughts.
Ponyboy had been very silent about these dreams, but decided it was time to talk with someone about it. He built up the courage and phoned Darry to meet for supper. After a lengthy discussion, Darry showed fire in his eyes and pleaded for Ponyboy to leave Paul or face the consequences. That was the final straw for Ponyboy and he had left in anger.
After another nightmare fueled dream, Ponyboy awoke to Paul making breakfast. Paul was getting ready to leave for practice while Ponyboy wasn’t sure why he was on an off day, but Paul insisted it was Friday. Ponyboy looked at the paper and news and it was indeed Friday. Frightened by the events, he went to school in a panic.
After going through the exact same day in class, Ponyboy arrived home with utter confusion. Paul’s cousins had come by for supper and to watch the NFL game. He asked what day it was, and it was Saturday. Ponyboy quickly panicked and left to get some fresh air. After a long walk, he arrived in the park where Dally was killed.
But there he saw the cops arriving and gunning down Dally, along with the rest of the greasers albeit missing Ponyboy running to save him. Was this a dream? He was freaking out about witnessing the same tragic event five years prior, but it was very vivid. He fainted.
Ponyboy awoke beside Sodapop. He attempted to leave before someone caught him, but out came Darry from the kitchen screaming at him for not being there for his friend during his death. Dally cried for Ponyboy, Darry explained. There was a bang at the door.
It was Paul, ready to destroy Ponyboy for leaving him worried all night and not coming home. After a heated argument, with Darry beyond confused as to what Paul was talking about in terms of Ponyboy not taking their marriage seriously, he punched Paul.
A fight ensued, which Ponyboy stepped in to break up but was sucker punched by Paul. Darry, never so angry in his life, let out a howling scream. His hair glowed bright yellow, as if he underwent a transformation. He unleashed his entire fury on Paul, and after one solid energy blast, the house exploded. Ponyboy was sent flying and knocked unconscious. His nightmare returned.
He awoke at the fountain where Bob was killed. He screamed with pure terror. Out of the shadows came Darry. He grabbed Ponyboy by the throat, lifting him into the air, and said he’s responsible for his parents death. Darry dropped Ponyboy, and there he stood in front of the train that killed his parents. He waved at them to get out of the car, and they did. They had no idea who he was, as Ponyboy was still a child. Ponyboy was struck by the train, but he wasn’t fatally hit, instead flying into the air being totally aware. Down came Darry with wings to save him.
Darry explained that time was being compressed into one moment so that history could be rewritten based on Ponyboy’s actions. Ponyboy fainted again with the same nightmare. He awoke in the lot with Johnny and knew what he needed to do. He went to the church on Jay Mountain, and there stood Darry explaining who the real enemy was. He needed Ponyboy to throw this coin into the pond.
Ponyboy threw the coin in, and then appeared a stairway leading to the clouds. He climbed it. There stood a gallant man, claiming to be God himself. He explained that this was needed to show Ponyboy that due to taking the wrong way home from the movie, he set these events into action.
Ponyboy stood before God himself, and challenged him to a duel. After the most anti-climactic battle in the history of the cosmos, Ponyboy emerged the victor. God explained that his nightmares were him invading Ponyboy’s mind to recreate the path of the universe. Ponyboy fainted.
Ponyboy became lucid as he was walking out of the theatre, and all he could think was “As I stepped out, into the bright sunlight, from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind, Paul Newman, and a ride home.”
