Well that is true. Nintendo keeps getting a ton of money from the franchise, so they'll just keep making them. It will never die, everyone plays it (people who claim it and people who don't).

But, the thing is, you cannot fully play Pokemon if you are a child. Most of them just catch whatever they want, battle their friends, etc, which is a ton of fun for a kid, but not for a teenager. However, there's more than meets the eye, so pretty much everyone can play Pokemon.
And if it weren't for that awful anime, Pokemon wouldn't be for children only. But generally that is why Pokemon franchise is so appreciated among both fans and critics. Most franchises don't stay on top after so many games released.

Actually, Hoenn had a lot of good Pokemon too. I mean, the starters are legendary, Metagross, Flygon, Altaria, and Breloom are major parts of non-Uber ladders.

^ That. And Hoenn was my favourite region, because it was really big and explorer-friendly.
