According to a rumor found by TSSZNews, a new Sonic game, possibly specific for the Wii U, is already being made, and takes place after Generations.
It will have visual quality equal to or greater than Generations, and will use many Wii U-specific things (plus a possible 4-person multiplayer!)
Story: Eggman messes with time and space 'gain and splits Sonic into multiple Sonics, each with different personalities and abilities. Red Sonic can supposedly use explosions, but is slower and jumps shorter (I presume he'll have an angry personality). Purple Sonic is basically Silver, being able to float and move platforms, and has the dark and depressing attitude of Shadow. Orange Sonic is sorta like Big the Cat, being slow and lumbering, but can power up... Yellow Sonic is the fastest, but weakest defensively. Green Sonic is unknown. A White Sonic appears and works as Super Guide, but gives you the lowest ranking possible.
If this sounds Nintendo-ish to you... that's because they are supposedly working with SEGA on the game. They plan on mostly working on the level design. Music Plant from Sonic Advance 2 has some concepts being used in Dimensions somehow...
Rival battles return also, as Eggman supposedly does this weird split thingy to EVERYONE (including himself! A nice Eggman plans to give him advice). There is also some 2D gameplay, with physics ripped from Generations.
