Now we all know the famed Italian plumber for his adventure packed
journeys to save Princess Peach, but do we truly know the secrets of the
Mushroom Kingdom?
Let's take a look at the power-ups. We'll
stick to the most basic ones, the red and green mushroom. The green
mushroom, once received and consumed by Mario, grants him an extra life.
Judging by the color of the specimen and the fungi-like resemblance,
one can assume this is a metaphorical reference to the lichens,
organisms made up of a symbiotic duo of algal and fungal cells. The
green refers to the chloroplasts of the algae, and the mushroom
shape...well that's self-explanatory. The extra life refers to the
lichen's literal ground breaking work starring in primary succession. By
breaking the surface of the rock, it creates a habitat suitable for
other organisms which brings LIFE to a once desolate land.. What of the
red mushroom? It has the ability in making Mario grow twice his size.
How is this possible? Could this be referring to the rapid growth in
fungi due to cytoplasmic streaming, concentrating organelles and
ribosomes in certain areas to speed up the increase of mycelium growth?
Could it also mean that Mario may in fact be coencytic and a fungus
himself?
It should be noticed that these mushroom abilities are
produced upward when Mario hits a block, much like a fruiting body stems
up from the mycelium. Could the very mycelium lie within those "?"
blocks? Could they be extracted and farmed in order to save lives and
stimulate the economy?
Speaking of public matters, the Toads are
the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom. They are a rather odd species.
Human like, yet with a mushroom for a head. What does this signify? Are
the Toads representing the evolutionary link between fungi and animals?
Are they really naturally annoying or is it because a parasitic specimen
feeds and controls their minds? This might explain why so many look
alike due to asexual reproduction and the not so abundant sexual
reproduction. The goombas are also like this, also possible relatives to
the Toads. Could they be the true common ancestor of fungi and animals?
In fact, why is Mario the only naturally looking human besides a few
others? Perhaps he did indeed travel to a different world or distant
past. Or he should just lay off the shrooms and get a life.
Don't do drugs kids.

Other words: I
wrote this on the back of my fungi exam in biology one day. I just
though to myself "What if I tried to explain Nintendo logic?" Oh, I
aced that exam by the way. Might do more of these in the future. We'll
see.
